Society completes another whole-company volunteering day

On Friday last week, Society took all of its colleagues off-site to spend a day helping out at Rowdown Primary School in Croydon.

Our team rolled up their sleeves in order to do some gardening and a spot of DIY. One group distributed over a ton of topsoil to all the flowerbeds around the school, another set about digging out a vegetable patch, a third set began plating some trees, and a four team set their sights on painting one of the large wood shelters in the playground.

Unsurprisingly, our efforts caught the attention of the children at breaktime. Our eager volunteers were rapidly surrounded by lots of inquisitive primary schoolers, overflowing with questions. One six year-old with a flair for comic timing, silently perused the painters' progress before confidently declaring "You missed a bit".

In the afternoon, Rowdown was launching its own two week long tribute to the Olympic Games, involving a series of school sports competitions. Society's volunteers got to take part in the opening ceremony and the flag parade, and to assist in the school's ‘Big Dance' World Record Attempt... although sadly most of the children had a better handle on the choreographed dance moves than we did!

This event was part of Give and Gain Day, a nationwide programme of volunteering managed by Business in the Community and sponsored by Lloyds Banking Group and Eversheds. For more information please visit www.bitc.org.uk/giveandgaindaylondon
