Two new members for University of Sussex Council
Following our work with the University of Sussex to appoint Independent Members of Council in 2015, the University returned to us to ask for support in a new round of appointments. As with all our work, a focus on delivering a diverse field from across sectors was fundamental to our approach.
The University of Sussex is building on the success of its 50th anniversary year. Ranked 14th in the UK in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2014-2015, over recent years it has seen significant achievements in delivering ambitious objectives outlined in its strategic plan, ‘Making the Future’. The University has over 14,000 students with staff and students from more than 120 countries.
We undertook a highly targeted search that returned candidates from a range of personal and professional backgrounds, spanning across sectors with significant board level and governance experience, a strong intellect and a willingness to constructively challenge and interact with all members of Council. From this process, the following two appointments were made:
Mark Devlin is currently the Chief Operating Officer at UNICEF UK, Chair of the Board of Trustees for 1st Place Children’s Centre and a Trustee of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health. Mark has previously been Chief Executive of two NHS Trusts, having built his career in the NHS across the UK.

Rosemary Martin is currently Group General Counsel & Company Secretary for Vodaphone, a Trustee of the Lloyds Register Foundation and an independent member of the board of EY. An alumna of Sussex, Rosemary has also worked for the Reuters Group following a Partner role in a major law firm. Alongside her executive career, Rosemary has also served on a range of Advisory Boards for organisations such as the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England & Wales and Financial Conduct Authority.
Mark and Rosemary joined the Council in October.
