Founded in 1952 but with a history dating back to 1862, the University of Southampton combines academic excellence with an innovative and entrepreneurial approach to research, supporting a culture that engages and challenges students and staff in their pursuit of learning.
The Department of Sociology, Social Policy and Criminology (SSPC) fosters pioneering research and exceptional educational experiences that lead to meaningful contributions to society. The Department takes an interdisciplinary approach to research, with experts in sociology, social policy, criminology, and psychology working together to approach intricate societal challenges from various angles.
The Head of Department of SSPC sits on the senior team in the School of Economic, Social and Political Sciences, based in the Faculty of Social Sciences. The Head of SSPC will contribute to achieving the bold ambitions of the Department, the School and the Faculty. The Department plays a key role in the University’s aims of sustained quality and growth.
Society conducted a broad search across the top ranked universities nationally, identifying individuals with a proven track record of academic leadership and the ability to shape a positive culture of engagement at all levels of the Department.
Professor Peter Fussey joins the University of Southampton from the University of Essex, where he served as Co-Director of the Centre for Research into Information, Surveillance and Privacy (CRISP), a collaboration between the universities of St Andrews, Edinburgh, Stirling, and Essex. His current research explores the intersection of emerging technologies, law enforcement, intelligence agencies, and human rights.
Speaking of his appointment, Professor Fussey commented:
"I’m very much looking forward to joining the Department of Sociology, Social Policy and Criminology at Southampton, both as an academic colleague and as Head of Department. As a social scientist specialising in the human rights and social justice implications of emerging technologies, the interdisciplinary and collaborative opportunities offered by Southampton is particularly appealing."
Working in conjunction with the Head of School and Associate Deans at Southampton, Professor Fussey will be responsible for developing and delivering the vision and strategy of the Department, and providing strong academic leadership to ensure efficient and effective operations management.
Society would like to wish Professor Fussey all the best in his new role.
