Royal College of Art appoints new Head of Research Programmes
Society recently worked with the Royal College of Art on the appointment of Dr Catherine Dormor as its new Head of Research Programmes.
Currently Research Coordinator for Fashion and Textiles at Middlesex University, Dr Dormor has experience of supervising, managing and assessing a range of PhD routes. As Head of Research Programmes at the RCA, she will develop and expand the College’s current MPhil/PhD programme, oversee the introduction and growth of research Master's programmes (such as MRes), develop and introduce alternative doctoral routes (including industry-facing and flexible professional doctorates) and PhDs by publication, and lead on the development of professional research training for RCA staff, students and external clients.
Dr Dormor will be one of the three senior heads in the Research, Knowledge Exchange and Innovation department, working closely with the College’s six academic schools, the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design, the Helix Centre, the Creative Exchange (CX), the Academic Development Office and InnovationRCA. Awarded a PhD by practice and thesis in 2012 by University of the Arts London and Norwich University of the Arts, Dr Dormor exhibits and publishes both nationally and internationally and has work in a number of private collections. Initially reading maths and statistics at Plymouth University, Catherine came to textiles through a fascination of the rhythms and patterns formed in its productions. Her practice and writing focuses upon the forming of warp and weft upon the loom, drawing upon video, photography and stitch to bring these ideas to the fore. She has worked at Norwich University of the Arts and Middlesex University, teaching a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
She is delighted to be taking up a new post as Head of Research Programmes at the Royal College of Art, where she will have the opportunity to bring together strategic thinking, organisational and pedagogical skills with her love of research. Speaking about her appointment, Dr Dormor said:
“Working with Neena at Society has been a delight. In bringing this vacancy to my attention, seeking answers to my many questions, processing my application and keeping me informed about the state of the selection process, Neena made the experience hugely positive. At all times professional, but supportive and friendly, I cannot thank Society enough.”
Catherine joins the RCA in August 2016.
