Cardiff University hires Dr Lee Coombes as Director of Assessment.

Dr Lee Coombes has been appointed to Cardiff University as Director of Assessment in the Institute of Medical Education to lead on the development of a new assessment strategy and represent the School nationally and internationally.

Since its foundation in 1893, the School of Medicine has been committed to the pursuit of improved human health, through education, research and engagement with the wider world. The School of Medicine at Cardiff is one of the largest in the UK, employing nearly 500 academic and 300 support staff. Over 1000 undergraduate and 1100 postgraduate students are currently enrolled on medical and science courses. In the latest National Student Survey results the School ranked 25th for overall satisfaction and is ranked in the top 100 in the World University Rankings for medicine.

The School was looking to appoint an inspirational leader for its assessment programme, who can bring significant experience of developing assessment programmes and of curriculum design and implementation to the role of Director of Assessment. Working with academic and administrative colleagues, Lee will lead a diverse team to develop a new assessment strategy for the School’s undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and ensure its successful delivery.

The search targeted individuals working in higher education institutions and medical schools across the UK and Europe predominantly, as it was necessary to find someone with a significant track record of success in the management and delivery of medical education.

Having received both his BSc and PhD at the University of Plymouth, Lee went on to join the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry in a variety of roles, including Assessment analysis and a Lectureship in Clinical Education (Assessment Psychometrics). Lee’s PhD focused on developing a novel method of assessing expertise in cervical cytology screening and he has subsequently submitted to the Research Excellence Framework 2014. Lee is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
