Bishop Grosseteste boosts its capacity to work in partnership with schools
Tony Dixon has been appointed Head of Partnerships in the School of Teacher Development at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU). Tony joins from Plymouth University, where he is currently in charge of partnerships for the Faculty of Health, Education and Society. This is a new role for BGU, coming in response to a changing landscape in teacher education, which places more emphasis on the role of school-based training.
Bishop Grosseteste University College is an independent Church of England higher education institution. It has been delivering teacher education programmes since its inception in 1862, and has an excellent local and national reputation for its undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes, as well as for its professional development courses in this field. The Head of Partnerships is one of three new roles within the leadership team of the School of Teacher Development. As government policy continues to shift teacher training from universities to schools, the University recognises that strong partnerships with schools, other HEIs, and relevant national and local bodies will be crucial to its continued success.
Our search focused primarily on people working in teacher education in universities, schools, multi-academy trusts and relevant sector bodies in the UK. We presented a longlist of 16 candidates, including sitting headteachers, heads of teacher training departments in universities, and faculty partnership directors.
After a series of interviews and careful deliberation, Tony Dixon has been appointed and is due to take up post in September 2012. Tony is currently Partnerships Development Manager in the Faculty of Health, Education and Society at Plymouth University. He is responsible for the effective overall functioning of partnerships in close liaison with academic staff. Tony started his career in the aeronautical industry as an engineer with British Airways, the Ministry of Defence and British Aerospace. He then moved into the Further Education sector as a tutor and course leader, before taking an interest in external partnerships and joining Plymouth University.
