African Leadership Academy hires their sixth Dean

Derek Smith was appointed last year to the position of Dean for African Leadership Academy (ALA) who are based in Johannesburg, South Africa. 

ALA seeks to transform Africa by identifying, developing, and connecting a new generation of leaders. The Academy was founded on the belief that a new generation of ethical, committed leaders is the key to Africa’s development. Each year, ALA draws the most outstanding students from across Africa to its campus in South Africa. 

The Dean is the Academy’s “Head of School” and works each day to define and deliver a world-class boarding school program that prepares each student to become a transformative leader committed to creating a more prosperous and equitable future for the African continent, and the world. Derek has almost thirty years’ experience as an educator across West Africa, and has dedicated most of his career to African schools. He has worked with the British Council, AISEN, and the Alliance Francaise to improve education across Nigeria. He has received several awards for his contribution to international education, and joined African Leadership Academy in August 2023.
